Zhu Xinyu (1980)

Artist profile

Zhu Xinyu's art is enigmatic and profound, a realm without borders where the pull of the earth is keenly felt, yet its silence is so unsettling that we hesitate to explore it. Caught between darkness and glimpses of light, we feel as though the eerie twilight filtering through the trees is a supernatural illusion. Through his hyper-sensitive approach and interest in mystical ecology, Zhu Xinyu portrays landscapes not as romantic vistas, but as symbolic representations.

In his art, the landscape becomes a place where shadows, light, and the human form intertwine, evoking both reminiscence and meditation. We are urged to pay attention to this spiritual light, as it holds vital significance for us. His dreamlike settings resonate with our fears, doubts, beliefs, and inner selves. The scenes, frozen in time, invite contemplation and quiet reflection, serving as a metaphor for timelessness. The narrative remains elusive, yet the captivating light and interplay of natural lines infuse the scene with an alternative consciousness or fragmented memories. They offer a retreat from society, civilisation, and human company, while also suggesting possibilities and revelations.

Born in Haicheng, China, Zhu Xinyu came of age during an economic boom and did not directly experience the Cultural Revolution. His art is devoid of social criticism, focusing instead on internal exploration. Through introspective themes and a play of light, his work raises questions about psychology. Since 2007, Zhu's art has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Belgium, France, Singapore, China, and Taiwan.
